Japanese Battleships Volume I Miroslaw Skwiot 9788361220329 Books
Very interesting account of the development of Japanese battleships from around 1890 to the Yamato class of the late 1930s. Includes plans of the proposed fleets as developed by the Japanese naval leadership but not always adopted (usually for financial reasons). There are other books that offer more detail of the ship designs, but this one puts the entire Japanese battleship construction effort into the political and economic context of the times.Product details

Japanese Battleships Volume I Miroslaw Skwiot 9788361220329 Books Reviews
Fantastic information! Wished the rest of the series was out!
in general a disappointing book. many nice photos and volume two promises much more technical information but volume one is a less than rigorous study of early japanese ship-yard history and the political personalities that made ship-building in japan possible. the author promises a chronological format but he departs from linear narration again and again. buyers are better off with 'kaigun', the short battleship study by stille, or even conway's, watts, or jentschura. skwiot seems to have written extensively on this subject; i guess he decided that given unlimited space his readers should be 'present at the creation'. the text is followed by extensive appendices of questionable value-a complete list of all japanese prime ministers for example.
i have a material quibble also my copy's two gatefolds of mikasa are defective the fold-out page is detached.
undoubtedly there are some that will derive enjoyment from japanese battleships vol. one...if vol. two is as promised i anticipate it avidly.
